Ávila y alrededores de la Sierra de Gredos

Según la propia ciudad, Ávila de los Caballeros es piedra, granito, arenisca, torreones y puertas. Ávila es la luz que la ilumina, la hace piel, tacto, la llena d matices y texturas.
Piedra y luz conformas este escenario magnífico, en el que a la sombra de la muralla y de su catedral se cobijan palacios e iglesias, conventos y monasterios, callejas y plazas, rincones y zaguanes. En los que habitaron celtas, bettones, romanos, árabes, moriscos, francos, reyes y santos, serranos y soldados. Hombres y mujeres de veinte siglos. Sus ecos aún están en las calles y en los rostros de esta ciudad hermosa, que fue declarada por la UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1985.Es la capital de provincia más alta de España, a 1131 m sobre el nivel del mar, en su casco urbano son relativamente frecuentes las nevadas durante el invierno.
Tras la fundación romana y la asimilación de la población autóctona vetona de la zona —pues no existen indicios claros de un asentamiento prerromano en el casco histórico— la ciudad pasaría al poder visigodo. Ávila caería, al igual que la mayor parte del territorio peninsular, bajo dominio musulmán a comienzos del siglo VIII, y no sería reconquistada de forma definitiva por las tropas cristianas hasta el siglo XI. Experimentaría su auge durante el siglo XVI, para verse posteriormente sumida en una prolongada crisis y declive hasta el siglo XIX, en el cual la construcción del ferrocarril consiguió dar un empuje al desarrollo económico.
La seña de identidad es su muralla medieval completa, de estilo románico, destacando también otras construcciones representativas como la catedral del Salvador —cuyo cimborrio se monta sobre la muralla— o la basílica de San Vicente.
La sierra de Gredos es una sierra de España perteneciente al Sistema Central, situada entre las provincias de Salamanca, Cáceres, Ávila, Madrid y Toledo. Su máxima altitud se da en la provincia de Ávila en la Plaza del Moro Almanzor a 2.592 m. Está declarada parque regional dentro de Castilla y León, y es el único parque regional, junto con el de Picos de Europa en León, de esta Comunidad Autónoma. Gredos es una de las sierras más extensas del Sistema Central y está compuesta por cinco valles fluviales: Alto Tormes, Alto Alberche, Tiétar Oriental, Tiétar Occidental y la Vera, y Valle del Ambroz. En torno a sus grandes moles graníticas basculan cuatro comunidades autónomas: Castilla y León, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha y Madrid; extendiéndose de Este a Oeste desde San Martín de Valdeiglesias a Hervás y de Norte a Sur del valle del Tormes a Rosarito. Su agreste relieve ha servido de refugio a la tribu celta más meridional (los vetones) y a otros rebeldes históricos como El Empecinado o los maquis. Arenas de San Pedro es uno de los municipios, dónde mejor se observa la Sierra de Gredos.
